The Election Commission has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) period for updating voter lists till December 11. Councillors across the city have welcomed the extension, saying it will help achieve fuller voter coverage. Under the new schedule, voter enumeration and polling-station rationalisation will continue till December 11. The draft voter roll will be published on December 16, and the final electoral roll is set for February 14, 2026. Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar said the extension is welcome but issues persist for residents in rented houses or temporarily relocated. He inspected the Saidapet area and noted that most work was done to meet the earlier deadline of December 4. “Of the 750 forms distributed, 550 have been collected from residents. Now, without haste, the remaining 150 can be completed with ease,” he said. He added that the earlier deadline caused officials to neglect routine civic issues and delay the November council meeting because of SIR work. Ward 12 councillor V. Kaviganesan pointed out that some Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) want the process finished quickly to return to their other duties. However, Booth Level Agents (BLAs) support the extension as it helps cover all voters and avoids missing anyone due to earlier rush. Many ruling party councillors share this view. AIADMK councillor J. John praised the extension. He said some booths have only 45%-50% of forms returned with proper details. "It is true that BLOs would be stressed. But, during every election, many complain that their names are missing from the voter list. This is due to a lack of awareness among people. SIR will help in bridging this and ensuring all voters are in the final electoral rolls," he said.
