December 1, 2025
Floods and landslides have hit parts of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, killing more than 1,000 people, officials said. Indonesia’s death toll is now 502, with 508 people missing, according to its national disaster management agency. Sri Lanka has reported at least 355 deaths, with 366 still missing, mostly in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Badulla. Floodwaters in Colombo, the capital, peaked overnight and are expected to go down as rains stop. Both Sri Lanka and Indonesia have sent military personnel to aid victims and speed rescue efforts. Thailand has seen at least 176 deaths in the south, marking one of its deadliest floods in ten years. Malaysia’s northern Perlis state has reported two deaths. Emergency teams are struggling to reach trapped survivors in the hardest-hit areas. Authorities continue searching for missing people as the region grapples with this massive disaster.
