Avarekai Arrival Delayed in Bengaluru; Prices Soar to ₹80 Per Kilo Amid Rain Impact
December 1, 2025
The arrival of avarekai, a popular seasonal bean, is delayed in Bengaluru's markets this year. Poor northeast monsoon rains and heavy August rains around the city hit the crop supply. Normally, avarekai appears in markets by November and continues until January. But the cold wave now is good for the crop aroma, experts say. Neelamma, a long-time vendor in Malleswaram market, said, "By now, the price of a kilo of avarekai should have stabilised at around ₹40 to ₹50. But it is still as high as ₹80." Hitukida avarebele, or skinned beans, is costing as much as ₹400 per kilo. Farmer Chennathimmaiah from Magadi did not plant avarekai this year due to losses in prior years. Many farmers missed the sowing period in August because of nonstop rain. Srinivas, a farmers' leader from Chickballapur, said sowing is low in Kolar and Chickballapur districts. A grocery chain procurement officer added, "Because of heavy August rains, the crop was sown late, so supply is delayed. We expect supply to rise in two weeks." Shivamadu, director at HOPCOMS, confirmed avarekai is arriving from the Hunsur region. Crops from Kolar, Chickballapur, and Bengaluru Rural are starting to trickle in and will increase soon.
