Paravur Municipality Elections: Hung Councils Likely As NDA Gains Influence
December 2, 2025
Paravur municipality elections always feature tough competition and changing political scenes. Neither the Left Democratic Front (LDF) nor the United Democratic Front (UDF) can claim an outright majority easily. This results in hung councils often. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is growing stronger, making results even more uncertain.
Looking back at the last three elections shows this pattern clearly. In 2015, LDF won a rare majority with 17 seats. But in 2010 and 2020, neither front had clear control. The 2020 election ended in a dramatic 14-14 tie between LDF and UDF. The LDF seats fell from 17 to 14, losing ground. UDF made a comeback, rising from 11 to 14 seats. Meanwhile, NDA improved from 3 to 4 seats, becoming the kingmaker in forming the council. The municipal chairperson chose was UDF’s Sreeja P.
The 2020 tie highlighted Paravur’s ongoing political instability. Residents blame both LDF and UDF for not improving the area. They say the working-class community, especially those in coir and handloom, see little real progress. This political deadlock hurts development badly.
NDA’s rising power is a key trend. Though still third, NDA’s seat count rose steadily from 1 in 2010 to 4 in 2020. This gives them a vital role in tipping the scale.
For the 2025 elections, UDF is contesting all 32 seats (Congress 30, RSP 2). LDF fields CPI(M) in 26 seats and CPI in 6. BJP will contest 29 wards, avoiding Thekkumbhagam, Vadakkumbhagam, and Puthiyakavu. Both main fronts deeply desire an outright majority this time. They want to avoid depending on NDA or forming tough coalitions after results.
This election promises another round of intense battle in Paravur, where political deadlock has become the norm.
