Kerala and Tamil Nadu Partner for Mineral Sand Mining and Value Addition
December 2, 2025
Kerala and Tamil Nadu are teaming up to mine mineral sand from Tamil Nadu's coastline and turn it into valuable products. The two states’ Industries Ministers discussed combining Tamil Nadu's raw materials with Kerala's technical skills. Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) sees profit potential in extracting ilmenite, used to make titanium dioxide, from Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu wants all mining and processing to happen within its borders. KMML asked Tamil Nadu for help in getting Central government approval for sand mining and land allocation. They also proposed creating a joint venture with Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN). Tamil Nadu agreed in principle to this plan and will take next steps. Officials said if the venture works, it will be a big win for Kerala's public companies KMML and Travancore Titanium Products Ltd (TTPL). The meeting included Kerala Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, Tamil Nadu's T.R.B. Rajaa, top officials from both states, and KMML leaders. Besides mineral mining, they talked about working together on AI governance, electric vehicles, tourism, and tech. This collaboration could boost mineral product output and strengthen ties between the two southern states.
