PUCL Alleges Torture Behind Darshan Singamalai's Custodial Death in Karnataka, Seeks Judicial Probe
December 2, 2025
A fact-finding team from the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has accused police officers at Karnataka’s Vivekanagar Police Station of torturing 28-year-old Darshan Singamalai to death in custody. Darshan was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on November 12, 2025, after being accused of showing a knife to a food delivery person. His family was told he was a “rowdy” and taken for questioning. PUCL claims Darshan was held illegally for four days and beaten with lathis and pipes inside the station. His mother, Adilakshmi, reportedly visited on November 13 but was denied his release. On November 16, police forced the family to send him to a private rehab centre for alleged alcohol treatment. At the centre, Darshan could barely walk. Staff, under police orders, lied he “fell from a bike.” After more than a week in rehab, Darshan’s family was told he suffered breathing problems and died on November 26. Doctors at Nelamangala Government Hospital found injuries on his body matching signs of custodial assault. The Madanayakanahalli Police registered a case and moved the body for post-mortem. PUCL’s report says 8–12 police officers threatened Darshan’s wife, Ashwini, to withdraw the complaint. PUCL and the Association of Prisoners’ Families for Justice have asked Karnataka’s government to protect Darshan’s family, suspend and arrest the officers involved, and order a judicial probe monitored by the CID.
