Trump Accuses Honduras Election Fraud, Pardons Convicted Ex-President Hernández
December 2, 2025
Donald Trump has accused Honduras officials of "trying to change the results" of the country's presidential election. The vote count was paused on Monday with two rightwing candidates, Nasry “Tito” Asfura and Salvador Nasralla, locked in a tight race. Asfura led by only 515 votes before the virtual count stopped due to a technical problem. The electoral court said the manual count was ongoing.
On his own social network, Trump warned, "if they do, there will be hell to pay!" He had earlier backed Asfura and linked US support to his victory. In a surprising move, Trump pardoned former president Juan Orlando Hernández, convicted in New York of drug trafficking and sentenced to 45 years in prison for creating a cocaine route to the US. Hernández's wife announced his release, saying, "God is faithful and never fails!" and that Hernández was free again through Trump's pardon.
The pardon shocked many observers, who noted Trump's tough talk against drugs and his efforts to oust Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro. In Honduras, critics saw this as clear election interference. Rixi Moncada, the leftwing candidate, accused Trump of "imperial, direct foreign interference." Moncada, previously finance minister under President Xiomara Castro, trailed in third with 19.16% votes. Asfura had 39.91%, and Nasralla 39.89%.
Trump called Moncada "a communist" and said her win would benefit "Maduro and his narco-terrorists." Nasralla, a former vice-president turned rival, was called a "borderline communist" by Trump, accused of splitting votes between Asfura and Moncada.
The electoral court has up to 30 days to finalize results. All candidates urged faster announcements. Asfura said, "Let’s not keep the country waiting, on edge." This election drama continues as Honduras awaits its next president.
