Over 17,000 Complaints on Jal Jeevan Mission, 84% From Uttar Pradesh

The government received 17,036 complaints about problems in Jal Jeevan Mission projects across India. About 84% of these complaints came from Uttar Pradesh alone. These complaints reported "irregularities" and "poor work quality" in projects meant to provide clean drinking water to rural homes.
The Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, told the Rajya Sabha that action was taken against 621 Departmental Officials, 969 contractors, and 153 Third Party Inspection Agencies (TPIAs). These complaints were collected from 32 States and Union Territories through various sources like media, public representatives, citizens, and grievance portals.
Uttar Pradesh alone reported 14,264 complaints. Of these, enquiries were completed for 14,212 cases, with 52 still under process. The state acted in 434 cases, involving 171 government officials, 120 contractors, and 143 TPIAs. Other states with notable complaints include Assam with 1,236 and Tripura with 376 complaints.
The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to give every rural household access to safe tap water. Since 2019, about 81% of rural homes say they have a water connection. However, many households report inconsistent or no actual water supply despite the connection on paper.
