BKS Calls for Ban on Land Pooling, Uniform Land Laws to Protect Farmers Across India
December 2, 2025
The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) has asked the Union Government to ban land pooling across India and bring uniformity to land acquisition laws. This call comes after BKS successfully lobbied Madhya Pradesh to shelve its Simhastha project, which planned to acquire thousands of hectares of farmers’ land for Kumbh Mela infrastructure.
On December 1, 2025, BKS raised concerns about farmers losing land under the guise of development with poor compensation and rehabilitation. They shared a 15-point memorandum highlighting that old British land laws continued to affect farmers, even after the 2013 law came in. Amendments by state governments weakened protections further.
BKS pointed out findings from the Indian Agro-Economic Research Centre showing low or no compensation to farmers after land acquisition. They also condemned laws like the Land Pooling Act, calling it deceptive and allowing officials to pressure farmers unfairly.
BKS demanded that any law affecting farmers should require consent from 80% of the Gram Sabha residents. They insisted compensation must be four times the market or registered value and rehabilitation must be completed before taking land possession.
For tribal displacements, BKS suggested relocating villagers together to preserve their culture. They opposed acquiring multi-crop irrigated lands unless for vital public projects and proposed making farmers shareholders in development projects.
BKS warned that state-level amendments have removed crucial safeguards. They urged the Central Government to, if needed, amend the Constitution for uniform laws. They called for strict punishments against officials who mislead or misuse rules, with a timeline of one year for action.
This strong stance by BKS aims to protect farmers nationwide from unfair land grabs and secure their rights in development plans.
