A large amount of German ammunition was stolen from a delivery truck in the eastern town of Burg, said Germany's defence ministry. Officials did not give exact numbers, but weekly magazine Der Spiegel said nearly 20,000 rounds went missing. The theft likely happened after a civilian truck driver, contracted by the military, left the lorry in an unguarded parking lot overnight on November 25. When the shipment arrived the next day at Clausewitz Barracks, the ammunition was gone. The stolen items include 10,000 live pistol rounds, 9,900 blank bullets for assault rifles, and smoke grenades, reports say. The military and police are investigating the theft. No arrests or suspects have been named yet. The defence ministry told German media, "We take the theft very seriously - this kind of ammunition must not fall into the wrong hands." The Bundeswehr's investigation will focus partly on why the driver did not find a safe stop location. Germany's public broadcaster MDR said a special hotline and armed escorts are available for drivers needing help. The driver reportedly left the vehicle in the parking lot and stayed overnight in a nearby hotel. This case adds to recent ammunition losses in Saxony-Anhalt: 90 rounds vanished in Bernburg in August; 180 rounds disappeared earlier in Eisleben. No clear link has been found between these incidents.
