Two British women, Melanie Watters (54) and Janine Reid (55), are stranded in Sri Lanka’s tea mountains after Cyclone Ditwah caused landslides. They were driving from Kandy when their car got stuck in a ditch. Nearby, a bus was swept off a cliff. The women and their driver had to spend a night in the car. Their daughter, Katie Beeching, said they found shelter at a tea plantation but are running out of food, water, and fuel. Roads in and out of Pussellawa remain blocked. Beeching told officials at the UK Foreign Office about the urgent situation. She said, "I said, ‘This is your job.’ And he said, ‘It isn’t our responsibility.’ There are literally two British nationals on their own, no food, water, fuel, no way in or out. This is getting worse. The weather’s going to change again in a couple of days. There has to be a plan… I said, ‘This could be lives lost if you don’t take some sort of action, genuinely.’ But they just said, ‘No, there’s no plan.’" The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has not commented yet. Meanwhile, India evacuated over 330 stranded citizens from Sri Lanka using helicopters from INS Vikrant and the Indian Air Force. They also assisted Sri Lankan search and rescue. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake called Cyclone Ditwah "the largest and most challenging natural disaster in our history." Beeching said her mother and friend had been on holiday since November 21 and were due back soon. They had planned to take a train but switched to driving due to warnings. The cyclone hit heavily in the mountainous plantation areas. On Thursday, they sent messages describing widespread landslides and a bus falling off a cliff. Their driver tried to return to Kandy but got stuck near Pussellawa. Beeching, who works with NGOs and formerly with the National Crime Agency, said her efforts to get help from the UK officials, including the high commissioner, were unsuccessful. The local tourist police told her the military had not arrived yet, although helicopters were seen retrieving bodies nearby.
