Mass Resumes at St. Mary’s Cathedral After Over 1,000 Days of Dispute
December 3, 2025
Public Mass resumed at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica on Monday evening after a gap of more than 1,000 days. The church had been closed due to a standoff between two groups of believers over how Mass should be conducted.
The evening Mass at 6 p.m. was led by Fr. Thomas Mangatt, the basilica administrator. On Tuesday, Masses took place at 6.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with full participation from the faithful.
One Sunday Mass will now be held in a uniform mode as decided by the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese.
Riju Kaanjookkaran, spokesperson for laity group Almaaya Munnettam, said, "The Masses resumed after it became clear, following an appeal from the basilica administrator before the court concerned, that there is no order preventing the Mass at the cathedral. A consensus over the mode of Masses was reached as the administrator received a reply that there is no hurdle before offering the Mass if the Church leadership permits."
The movement has urged Church leadership to apply this consensus in all churches within the archdiocese.
