Karnataka High Court Seeks Views on SOP After Stampede Deaths at RCB Celebration
December 3, 2025
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday accepted the State Advocate-General’s suggestion to gather opinions from all parties involved on the government’s proposed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This comes after the court suo motu took up a public interest litigation (PIL) petition following the death of 11 people in a stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The tragedy occurred during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebrations.
A Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Poonacha, adjourned the case until January 20. The court allowed Advocate-General K. Shashi Kiran Shetty to collect views from the parties and take necessary steps based on their responses.
The court originally took the case suo motu to find out what caused the stampede, if it could have been avoided, and what steps should be taken to stop such incidents in the future.
