At least three people were hurt when part of an old building fell on a makeshift eatery on Darga Street in Dashamakan, Chennai, on Tuesday evening. The accident happened around 9:15 p.m. The injured were taken to the hospital. The victims were identified as Hafeez, 44; Ayub Khan, 55; and Nisha, 48. Fire and rescue officers and Purasawalkam Tahsildar Kuppammal Ramu quickly arrived at the scene. The site is located in Ward 73, Zone 6 of the Greater Chennai Corporation. The old building was empty and not occupied. “There were two to three eateries there when the wall fell on the sheet (roof) of the eatery around 9.15 pm. The couple running the shop and another person were injured. They were taken on an ambulance to KMC,” said Ziyaullah, an SDPI official present at the scene. Ziyaullah added this was the first time such an event happened in the main area. He urged the building owner to provide medical help and support to those injured. He also warned that many old buildings in the area remain a risk to local people.
