Kerala Suicides Rise Sharply; Experts Warn of Mental Health Crisis
December 3, 2025
Kerala has one of the highest suicide rates in India, with 28.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2022—more than double the national average of 12.4. Only Sikkim, at 43.1, is higher. Experts say fragile mental health is the main cause behind this alarming trend, not just political stress. According to a 2021 study, mental health cases in Kerala rose drastically from 272 per 1,000 people in 2008 to 400 per 1,000 in 2018. About 12% of the population suffers from severe mental illnesses needing hospital care. This contrasts with other states where mental health issues have decreased or remained steady.
The 2015-16 National Mental Health Survey found that depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies in Kerala are well above the national average. Poor mental health also fuels social problems like drug abuse, violence, and alcoholism. Experts urge comprehensive mental health programs for all ages, improved school health education, and better-trained counsellors. Kerala's mental health services and hospitals must be better coordinated, with private and voluntary groups also playing a role.
A major problem is the lack of mental health workers. Global norms suggest 3 professionals per 10,000 people, but Kerala only has 0.12 psychiatrists and 0.06 clinical psychologists per 10,000. Increasing training seats and new courses is urgently needed.
The state has not prioritized mental health like other health issues, leading to this crisis. With public debate growing, B. Ekbal, a neurosurgeon and public health expert, calls on the government and experts to take strong, long-term action. People needing help can contact DISHA suicide prevention helpline at 0471-2552056 or 1056.
