December 3, 2025
At least 13 children at the Scheduled Tribes Gurukul in Jogulamba Gadwal district fell ill on Tuesday after eating breakfast in the hostel mess. The students were served upma with roasted chickpea powder and ragi jawa. Some students noticed worms in the upma and were told to discard the meal. They were given bananas and biscuits instead and sent to school. However, after reaching school, several students complained of stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness. They soon collapsed and were rushed to Government General Hospital. Doctors suspect food contamination caused the illness. All affected children are stable and under observation. Videos show staff rushing students to the hospital ward, where they received IV fluids. Students told the media they found worms in their upma, which led to their sickness.
