US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he does not want Somali immigrants in the US, telling reporters they should "go back to where they came from" and declaring, "their country is no good for a reason." Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Trump added, "I don't want them in our country, I'll be honest with you." He criticized Somalia as "barely a country" with no structure and claimed Somalis "run around killing each other." Trump also attacked Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American in Congress, saying, "I always watch her" and calling her "an incompetent person" who "hates everybody." Omar responded on social media, calling his "obsession with me... creepy" and said, "I hope he gets the help he desperately needs." These comments came as US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced plans to launch an enforcement operation targeting undocumented Somali immigrants in Minnesota's Twin Cities, home to one of the largest Somali communities in the world and the largest in the US. Hundreds are expected to be targeted starting this week. The Department of Homeland Security denied that any operation targets people based on race. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, "What makes someone a target of ICE is not their race or ethnicity, but the fact that they are in the country illegally." Local leaders have condemned the planned operation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey warned it "means due process will be violated." Minnesota state Senator Zaynab Mohamed said, "Almost all of us are US citizens." Governor Tim Walz criticized the move as a "PR stunt," stressing the community welcomes crime investigations but not "indiscriminately targeting immigrants." The crackdown comes after the recent killing of two National Guard members in Washington DC by a suspect from Afghanistan. The Trump administration also plans to end Temporary Protected Status for Somali residents in Minnesota, affecting hundreds. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the agency will tackle visa fraud in the state.
