Hanuma Jayanti Procession Held in Srirangapatna Under Tight Security Amid Temple Dispute
December 3, 2025
On December 3, the Hindu Jagran Vedike (HJV) organised a Hanuma Jayanti procession in Srirangapatna, Mandya district, Karnataka. The district administration increased security to prevent any incidents during the Hanuma Male Sankirtana Yatra celebrations by the same group.
The event is sensitive. HJV claims the Hanuman temple in Srirangapatna was destroyed during Tipu Sultan's era and replaced by Jamia Masjid in 1786. HJV seeks custody of the mosque site to rebuild the temple.
The procession started from Nimishambha temple by the Cauvery river at 10 a.m., followed by the sankirtana yatra at 11 a.m. Devotees marched to Srirangapatna Fort to see the Moodalabagilu Anjaneyaswami shrine.
Lohit V. Urs of Moodalabagilu Hanuma Mala Samithi said, "There will be mala visarjan and prasad distribution near Sriranganathaswamy temple." He added that devotees vow to rebuild the temple at the original spot. The yatra is an annual event to show this resolve.
Following recent communal clashes in Mandya, the administration and police took strong measures to maintain peace. Deputy Commissioner Kumar chaired a communal harmony meeting and said, "All cooperation for the religious and sacred observance of the sankirtana yatra would be extended. But it is everyone’s primary duty to ensure that the religious sentiments of other faiths are not hurt during this occasion."
He further stated, "Permission has been granted to religious observance, and it should be done peacefully. Nobody should act to disturb peace and order in society."
Organisers were also warned to avoid law violations. District Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi said over 100 CCTV cameras would monitor sensitive areas and police would keep close watch.
The administration’s proactive steps aim to ensure the procession proceeds without violence or disruption.
