Calcutta High Court Reverses Order Canceling Jobs of 32,000 West Bengal Primary Teachers
December 3, 2025
On December 3, 2025, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court overturned a previous single Bench order that had annulled the appointments of 32,000 primary school teachers in West Bengal. These teachers were recruited via the 2014 Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET).
The Bench, led by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, said it did not find enough proof of irregularities in all the appointments. The court noted that ending the jobs after nine years would severely affect the teachers and their families.
The CBI investigation, ordered by the High Court, initially found irregularities in 264 appointments and later reviewed 96 more. Given this, the court ruled that canceling the entire recruitment process was unfair.
This move reverses the single Bench order by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on May 12, 2023, which had canceled these teachers' appointments.
