New Jersey Governor Seeks India's Help to Extradite Murder Suspect Nazeer Hameed
December 3, 2025
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has formally requested the Indian government’s assistance in extraditing Nazeer Hameed, an Indian national accused of killing a mother and her son in 2017. Sasikala Narra and her six-year-old son Anish were murdered, and Hameed, who worked with Sasikala’s husband, is the prime suspect. The crime shocked New Jersey, and the investigation took eight years to identify Hameed as the accused.
Murphy wrote to Indian envoy Vinay Kwatra citing the US-India Extradition Treaty. He stated, "This heinous crime shocked our state, and for eight years investigators pursued every available lead. Recent forensic evidence, including DNA analysis by the New Jersey State Police DNA Laboratory, has linked Mr. Hameed to the crime scene, leading to formal charges in Burlington County Superior Court. It is our understanding that Mr. Hameed is presently residing in India, having departed the United States shortly after the murders occurred." The governor added, "Allegations against Hameed are not yet proved and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty but he needs to participate in the judicial process within the US legal system."
The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Hameed’s arrest. Two years after the murders, a lab report found a drop of blood at the scene that did not belong to the family. Hameed became a suspect as he lived close to the victims. However, he had already returned to India and refused to give a DNA sample.
In 2024, investigators secured a court order to obtain Hameed’s company laptop from India without his knowledge to gather DNA evidence. The samples matched the blood found at the crime scene. Since then, police continue their search for Hameed to bring him to justice.
