Vizhinjam International Seaport Turns 1, Handles 1.32 Million TEUs with Major Expansion Underway
December 3, 2025
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – The Vizhinjam International Seaport has completed one year of commercial operations, setting new records. Operated by Adani Ports and Kerala government, the port handled 1.32 million TEUs cargo and 615 vessels in 10 months, becoming the fastest Indian port to reach 1 million TEUs. It managed 41 ultra-large container vessels over 399 metres and 154 ships over 300 metres long, showing its strength in handling the world’s largest vessels.
Notably, MSC Verona, with a 17.1-metre draft—the deepest ever in South Asia—and MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship, docked here this year. For the first time in India, women automated crane operators were deployed, promoting gender inclusion.
Work on the port’s second phase has started, including extending the breakwater from 3,000 m to 3,900 m and expanding container terminal berth from 800 m to 2 km. This ₹9,700 crore investment will increase annual handling capacity beyond 4 million TEUs, making Vizhinjam the biggest container port in southern India.
Located near major East-West shipping routes, Vizhinjam is rising as a top deep-water transshipment hub for India. Officials said the port’s successful first year boosts India’s role in global shipping and maritime trade.
