Ramesh Chennithala, former Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, stated on Wednesday that the Congress party has no obligation to protect Rahul Mamkootathil. Speaking to media in Thrissur, he said the party leadership would meet and decide what to do after the court verdict on Mamkootathil’s anticipatory bail plea. Chennithala explained that the complaint about Rahul Mamkootathil’s abuse was quickly sent to the Director General of Police by the KPCC president, and that Congress followed all proper procedures. "In the Rahul Mamkootathil matter, it is the Congress that has taken the strongest action seen in Kerala’s political sphere," he told reporters. "My stand on this issue has been clear from the beginning, and the people and the media of Kerala are well aware of it." He said that even though the case involves Mamkootathil’s personal conduct, it affects the party’s image, which is why swift action was necessary. Chennithala also criticized the CPI(M), claiming they promoted accused individuals and dealt with cases internally through a "party court" instead of via the legal system.
