Communities across Australia are urged to take precautions ahead of a severe heatwave. Temperatures in western Sydney are expected to hit the low 40s by Saturday. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued heatwave warnings for New South Wales (NSW), Western Australia (WA), and the Northern Territory (NT).
NSW's south coast has an extreme heatwave warning—the highest risk level. Other regions, including Hunter, metropolitan Sydney, Illawarra, southern tablelands, and Snowy Mountains, face severe heatwave warnings. Cities like Sydney, Newcastle, Batemans Bay, Gosford, Camden, Mona Vale, Nowra, Richmond, and Wollongong are likely to be affected.
Senior meteorologist Christie Johnson said, "Extreme means that it’s dangerous for everyone, even for healthy people, if you don’t take precautions." She highlighted that the most dangerous day is often the third consecutive day of high temperatures.
Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, babies, children, and people with medical conditions are most at risk. Johnson advised people to "seek places where you can stay cool" by using air conditioners, fans, or visiting community centers and libraries. She also recommended keeping blinds down and windows closed early in the day.
In WA, severe heatwave warnings cover the Kimberley, Pilbara, and north interior regions with temperatures from the high 30s to mid 40s and warm nights in the mid to high 20s. These conditions may last most of next week.
NT’s Daly, Tiwi, and Gregory regions also have severe warnings, though the Tiwi Islands are expected to cool down by the weekend. Alice Springs will see highs reaching 37C on Thursday and low 40s Friday and Saturday but has no heatwave warning due to usual temperature ranges.
Johnson mentioned some Queensland regions, like the Gulf Country and North West, could receive warnings before the weekend. A cool change is expected in NSW late Saturday into Sunday.
With rising heat and serious warnings, experts urge everyone to prepare and protect themselves from the dangerous heatwave.
