Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Hits China's Xinjiang, Shallow Depth Sparks Aftershock Concerns
December 4, 2025
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck China’s Xinjiang region on Thursday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of just 10 km, which means stronger shaking and a higher chance of aftershocks. The NCS shared on X, “EQ of M: 6.2, On: 04/12/2025 13:14:07 IST, Lat: 41.10 N, Long: 78.61 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xinjiang, China.” Just days earlier, on December 2, a smaller quake of magnitude 3.9 was recorded in Xinjiang at the same depth. According to NCS, “EQ of M: 3.9, On: 02/12/2025 17:15:31 IST, Lat: 35.78 N, Long: 77.97 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xinjiang.” Shallow earthquakes like these cause stronger tremors because seismic waves reach the surface quickly. China is very prone to earthquakes. It sits between major seismic belts and faces pressure from the Pacific, Indian, and Philippine tectonic plates, creating many fracture zones.
