Telangana Seizes Record Drugs, Boosts Convictions in 2021-25 Crackdown
December 4, 2025
Telangana’s Excise and Prohibition Department reported a fierce crackdown on drugs from 2021 to 2025. They registered 4,194 NDPS cases and arrested 7,131 people. They seized 24,236 kilograms of ganja and uprooted 21,035 cannabis plants. The department also confiscated 1,824 vehicles and recovered large amounts of synthetic drugs, including 2.8 kg of MDMA, 689 LSD blots, 46.47 kg of hash oil, 383 grams of cocaine, 701.3 grams of heroin, and 227.6 grams of opium. The conviction rate in these cases reached 3.23%, with 2,659 cases still pending in courts. Since Telangana’s formation, 71 convictions have been recorded in excise cases, showing an increase in recent years: 16 cases in 2023, 11 in 2024, and a record 22 in 2025. This rate is higher than the police department’s 2.29%. Excise officials said better filing of charge sheets and stronger evidence helped improve convictions. This success follows instructions from Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to make Hyderabad drug-free and reduce narcotics use statewide. Prohibition and Excise Commissioner C. Harikiran and Enforcement Director Shahnawaz Qasim have led tough raids on ganja, synthetic drugs, and illegal liquor. Mr. Qasim said, “Only when a crime is punished does it create fear in everyone to commit a crime. It is a good development that the accused in excise cases are being punished in recent times. We will take steps to ensure that the Excise Department machinery works more effectively on marijuana and drugs.”
