The Madras High Court has barred the release of the film Vaa Vaathiyar, starring Karthi, following a plea by the Official Assignee. The production house Studio Green, led by K.E. Gnanavel Raja, owes ₹21.78 crore to the late businessman Arjunlal Sunderdas, who was declared insolvent. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan ordered an interim ban on the movie's release until December 5, 2025. The court will hear related petitions on December 8, 2025. This is not the first time the court has acted against Studio Green. In November 2024, the court similarly stopped the release of actor Suriya’s movie Kanguvaa until Gnanavel Raja deposited ₹6.14 crore. The dispute traces back to 2011 when Gnanavel Raja and Sunderdas agreed to co-produce a movie, each investing ₹40 crore. Sunderdas put in ₹12.85 crore before pulling out. In 2014, the court declared Sunderdas insolvent and appointed the Official Assignee to manage his debts owed to many investors. The Official Assignee found that Gnanavel Raja had to repay ₹10.35 crore with 18% interest since 2013. The court confirmed this in 2019 and ordered full repayment. Despite repeated petitions before each film release, the producer has not cleared the dues fully. Currently, the court has restrained Studio Green from releasing Vaa Vaathiyar until the ₹21.78 crore liability is resolved.
