Cotton farmers in Andhra Pradesh will protest on December 10 at the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) office in Guntur. They want the CCI to buy cotton immediately at the government's declared Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹8,110 per quintal. The protest is organised by the Andhra Pradesh Farmers’ Association (AIKES), linked to the Communist Party of India (CPI). Farmers face heavy losses this season due to cyclones, rain, floods, droughts, and pest attacks. Expected yields fell sharply from 10 quintals per acre to just 3 to 4 quintals. Many cotton bolls are damaged or discoloured. The government procurement centres set tough conditions like low moisture limits, blocking many farmers from selling. This forces them to sell to private traders at just ₹5,000 to ₹6,000, much below the MSP. AIKES demands that the government relax these rules and buy cotton at MSP immediately. They also ask for subsidies, crop insurance, implementation of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Commission recommendations, raising MSP to ₹12,000, waiving GST on farm inputs, government-funded transport, more procurement centres in all cotton areas, clearing 2.5 lakh bales stuck in CCI warehouses, and a bonus of ₹3,000 per quintal. AIKES calls all affected farmers to join the protest to ensure its success.
