French firefighters are mobilised to tackle early summer fires as 84 of the country's 101 administrative areas are put on a heatwave alert. Wildfires erupted in the Corbieres area of Aude in the southwest, with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees, leading to the evacuation of a campsite and abbey as a precaution. The south of the country experienced temperatures exceeding 40°C on Sunday, with Meteo-France reporting highs of up to 40.9°C in southeastern France. The extreme temperatures are predicted to spread across France, with highs of 37 to 40 degrees Celsius along the Mediterranean. An interministerial crisis meeting was held to address the heatwave’s impacts. Schools have been closed in some cities, and people are seeking relief from the scorching heat. The heatwave extends from Italy to Portugal, with several regions under red alert. Spain witnessed temperatures of 46°C on Saturday in El Granado. The heatwave is caused by a heat dome, trapping warm air and preventing cooler systems from entering.
