Karnataka Transport Minister Cracks Down on Overcharging by Autos in Bengaluru

June 30, 2025

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has taken action against the rampant issue of overcharging by autorickshaws in Bengaluru. Following complaints from commuters, Reddy instructed officials to cancel permits and penalize erring auto drivers, especially those affiliated with aggregators. The minister highlighted instances of exorbitant pricing disparities between different apps for the same distance, emphasizing the need for a crackdown on such practices. Commuters have expressed frustration over the prevalent trend of hidden charges, algorithmic pricing models, and ambiguous tipping norms associated with app-based auto services. Despite ongoing efforts by the transport department to address malpractices, some commuters remain skeptical about the effectiveness of enforcement measures due to long-standing challenges in regulating auto fares. Bengaluru Traffic Police have also stepped up initiatives to curb violations by autorickshaw drivers, including overcharging and refusal to ply. Special teams have been deployed to monitor driver conduct and penalize repeat offenders. Meanwhile, autorickshaw unions have been advocating for fare revisions in response to escalating operating costs and inflation pressures. While some unions have proposed revised fare structures, disagreements persist within the industry regarding the extent of tariff adjustments needed to offset rising expenses.
