MP Poojary Pushes for National Highway Status for SH 27 from Kundapura to Chikkamagaluru
December 5, 2025
Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has called on the Union Government to quickly declare a part of State Highway 27 as a National Highway. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 24, Mr. Poojary noted that the Union Road Transport Ministry has given in-principle approval but the formal declaration is still pending. The 170-km road connects Kundapura to Chikkamagaluru via Agumbe and Sringeri.
The MP highlighted that upgrading this stretch would greatly improve connectivity between coastal areas and the Western Ghats. It would help tourism in places like Someshwara, Agumbe, and Sringeri and support the movement of agricultural and commercial goods.
Specifically, the Kundapura-Sringeri section covers towns like Koteshwara, Halady, Someshwara, and Agumbe across Udupi, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru districts. The Sringeri-Chikkamagaluru (Nadipur) stretch passes through Agalagandi, Jayapura, Balehonnur, and Aldur and will better link the pilgrim town Sringeri to Bengaluru and nearby areas.
Mr. Poojary said the upgrade is vital for regional connectivity, economic growth, and safety. Currently, the highway width varies from 5 to 7 meters. Some parts near Koteshwara, Halady, Goliangady, and Sringeri have been improved. However, during the recent monsoon, the Aldur-Balehonnur section lacked bitumen road, causing trouble for motorists.
The MP submitted his letter to PM Modi during the latter’s visit to Udupi on November 28. He urged fast action to enhance this important route that links key towns, economic zones, temples, and farmlands.
