Mysuru’s Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) is shifting to advanced food technology. They plan to develop special foods for astronauts, athletes, and elderly people by 2030. CFTRI director Giridhar Parvatham said, “Our work is focused on foods for space missions with special emphasis on bone health.” CFTRI aims to address bone-related issues for astronauts. They are also working on natural endurance drinks for sportspeople and a three-meal nutrition kit for senior citizens. Parvatham noted, “Around 100 million people in India will be 60 or older by 2047, so we focus on foods for the geriatric population.” The institute recently transferred 94 technologies to Kerala’s government, earning ₹50 lakh. These technologies are available to individuals, NGOs, startups, and industries. CFTRI has developed a millet bun with McDonald’s, set to be supplied during the Red Fort cultural festival in New Delhi. Additionally, AI in food processing is a key focus. Parvatham said, “AI is playing a major role, and its benefits must be leveraged to develop new food processing technologies.”
