New U-turn Near GKVK Cuts Bengaluru Commute by 1.5 km, Eases Traffic
December 5, 2025
Bengaluru commuters from Airport Road via Byatarayanapura and Mall of Asia now travel shorter routes with a new U-turn near GKVK. Earlier, they had to make a detour of over three kilometres for a U-turn. Now, the trip is about 1.5 kilometres long. The Bengaluru North City Corporation, in coordination with traffic police, reorganised entry and exit points along the Byatarayanapura–GKVK corridor, a stretch known for heavy traffic jams.
The Byatarayanapura junction was a key choke-point on the Hebbal-Yelahanka route. Traffic streams from service roads and the Mall of Asia frontage clashed here. Vehicles from Kodigehalli and Sahakar Nagar merged from a service road, while many from L&T apartments cut across one-way roads to avoid the long U-turn. Commuters had to go up to Allalasandra to turn back, causing frequent traffic violations.
Now, a new exit after the mall and a new entrance near GKVK let motorists turn back much earlier. "The proximity of the new U-turn has directly curbed wrong-way driving, which had become routine because the earlier turn was several kilometres away," said North Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar.
The new plan is on a trial basis. The corporation plans to propose making the change permanent after consulting the NHAI, BMRCL, and traffic police. As part of this, the signal near Byatarayanapura junction on the service road is switched off to allow smooth flow toward the airport. Vehicles from the service road enter from the first opening toward Mall of Asia, reducing lane clashes and congestion.
The new U-turn near GKVK faced initial hesitation but is seen as a "calculated risk" that has worked. Traffic load shifted from the overburdened Byatarayanapura junction to two points: GKVK and Jakkur junction.
Daily commuter Srikhant M. said, "Earlier, vehicles from Mall and nearby areas would come on the wrong side just to avoid that long U-turn. Now that the diversion is in place, that wrong-side driving has reduced a lot. Many people still don’t know the new change, but slowly the flow is improving, you can actually see the difference on most days."
