Pregnant Sunali Khatun Returns to India After Six Months in Bangladesh
December 5, 2025
Sunali Khatun, a pregnant woman from West Bengal who was allegedly pushed into Bangladesh five months ago, returned to India on Friday, December 5, 2025. She crossed back with her minor child through Malda district on the India-Bangladesh border after the Supreme Court stepped in. Ms. Khatun and her child were part of six migrants from two families detained by Delhi Police in June for suspected Bangladeshi nationality, later forced into Bangladesh. The other four family members from Birbhum district are expected to return soon following the Supreme Court's repatriation order. The families' plight came to light when they sent a video message to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting help to return from Bangladesh. Trinamool Congress MP Samirul Islam called the return “a historic moment” exposing the hardships faced by poor Bengalis and praised the struggle against the “Bangla-Birodhi Zamindars.” Mr. Islam said Ms. Khatun was deported in June and has now returned after enduring six months of severe hardship. West Bengal officials said Ms. Khatun is unwell and will receive treatment at a State-run hospital before going to her home in Birbhum. Along with Ms. Khatun, Sweety Bibi and her two sons had been held in Bangladeshi prisons after the alleged pushback. On December 3, the Union government agreed to bring Ms. Khatun and her child back on humanitarian grounds following the Supreme Court's intervention. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant accepted the plea by Ms. Khatun's father, Bhodu Sekh, represented by senior advocate Sanjay R. Hegde, for their return to Paikar village in Birbhum. Earlier, Calcutta High Court ordered the repatriation of all six people on September 26. This followed writ petitions filed by Bhodu Sekh and Amir Khan. Ms. Khatun joins other migrant workers like Amir S.K. from Malda who returned to India after alleged pushbacks to Bangladesh. The issue continues as several migrant workers from West Bengal face detention and deportation on nationality suspicions within India.
