Fresh Clash in Eastern DR Congo Forces Hundreds to Flee to Rwanda Despite New Peace Deal
December 6, 2025
Fresh fighting broke out on Friday in eastern DR Congo’s South Kivu province where M23 rebels clashed with the Congolese army backed by Burundian soldiers. The struggle is over Kamanyola, a border town controlled by M23 where DR Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi meet. Explosions shook nearby Rwandan towns early Friday, forcing hundreds of civilians to flee across the border.
The fighting came a day after a peace deal was signed in Washington DC by DR Congo’s president Félix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame. The agreement aimed to bring calm to the resource-rich east, but no peace was seen on the ground yet.
M23 accused Burundi’s army of firing "without interruption" into DR Congo. A Burundian military source said reinforcements are arriving to stop M23 and their Rwandan backers from reaching Uvira, a city important to Burundi. The source warned, "There is a real risk the situation escalates. This is a red line for Burundi."
Residents described bombs exploding over houses and schools and hospitals being shelled. Immaculee Antoinette from Ruhumba said people were told to stay inside, but it was impossible. On the Rwandan side, locals hid as gunfire grew louder.
In January, M23, supported by Rwanda, captured major cities Goma and Bukavu in North and South Kivu provinces, escalating tensions. The fighting near Kamanyola shows the fragile state of peace efforts despite international agreements.
