FBI Arrests Brian J. Cole Jr. for Pipe Bombs Near Capitol on Jan 6 Attack
December 6, 2025
The FBI arrested Brian J. Cole Jr., 30, on Thursday for placing pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican committee headquarters before the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. He faces charges of transporting explosive devices across state lines and attempted malicious destruction. Cole told investigators he believed conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Trump. Cole spoke with law enforcement for over four hours after his arrest at his Virginia home.
New FBI and DOJ leaders have prioritized this case, which had been cold for four years. FBI Director Kash Patel said, "We solved it," while Attorney General Pam Bondi said more charges may come. Bondi added, "Today's arrest happened because the Trump administration made this case a priority."
Court documents revealed Cole bought bomb-making parts and that his cell phone was near the bomb sites on the night they were placed. A license plate reader also captured his vehicle near the scene. The FBI had offered a reward of approximately Rs 4.15 crore for information leading to his capture.
Cole appeared in court Friday wearing a beige jumpsuit and glasses. A pretrial detention hearing is set for December 15. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro called the successful case "a huge win" due to the massive data involved.
The bombs were found just as the Capitol was being breached during the riot. Officials said the devices aimed to divert police resources and that the tactic worked, allowing rioters to storm the building more easily. The arrest closes an important chapter in the investigation of the events surrounding January 6.
