December 6, 2025
A 24-year-old Indian student, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, has died after suffering severe injuries in a house fire in Albany, New York. The Consulate General of India in New York said on December 5 that it is “deeply saddened by the untimely demise” of Udumala. She was pursuing a Master’s degree in Albany.
The Albany Police Department stated the fire happened on the morning of December 4. Officers and firefighters found the house fully engulfed when they arrived. They rescued four adults from inside. These victims were treated onsite and taken to hospital. Two were moved to a burn center. Tragically, one adult female later died from the fire injuries. The police did not release names, but Udumala’s family confirmed her identity.
Udumala’s cousin, Rathna Gopu, started a fundraiser to cover funeral, memorial, repatriation, and family support costs. Gopu said, “Our family experienced an unimaginable tragedy when our beloved cousin, Sahaja Udumala, passed away following a devastating fire accident.”
“She was just 24 years old, a bright and hardworking student pursuing her Master’s degree with hope and promise.” Udumala suffered burn injuries over nearly 90% of her body. Gopu added, “She struggled immensely, fighting with all the strength she had. Despite all medical efforts, her condition continued to worsen, and she ultimately experienced complete organ failure, leading to her passing this morning.”
Udumala was known for her kindness and determination. The loss has left her family devastated both emotionally and financially. So far, over $109,000 has been raised out of the $120,000 goal.
The Indian Consulate is in touch with the family and providing assistance during this challenging time. They offered “heartfelt condolences” to the family.
