Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Saturday, December 6, 2025, that the new flyover at Melamadai junction in Madurai will be named after the brave freedom fighter Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga. The flyover, which will be inaugurated on Sunday, December 7, stretches 950 metres and has four lanes. It was built at a cost of ₹150.28 crore. The flyover aims to cut down traffic congestion at the busy Melamadai junction. This junction connects Sivaganga Road with the Aavin junction. Officials said the new structure is expected to ease traffic on the Madurai-Thondi Road and from Goripalayam to Ring Road. This will help daily commuters save time and reduce traffic jams in these busy stretches.
