The anticipatory bail plea filed by Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in a rape case involving a 23-year-old woman was postponed to Monday by the Additional District and Sessions Court. The court refused to grant interim protection from arrest until then. The MLA's counsel argued the FIR was invalid and politically motivated. They said the case was based solely on an anonymous email lacking details such as the complainant's name, location, or time of the alleged incident. However, the court noted the complaint was filed in 2023 and gained political weight after the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president received it. The prosecution suggested the KPCC president likely forwarded the complaint to the police after finding it credible. Despite the arguments, the court rejected bail protection before the full hearing. This petition came just an hour after the High Court granted Rahul Mamkootathil interim protection from arrest in a separate rape case. Meanwhile, the police appointed a special team led by AIG G. Poonkuzhali to investigate the complaint made by a Bangalore resident. The woman has agreed to cooperate with the ongoing probe.
