NHAI Orders Probe into Kollam Highway Wall Collapse; Emergency Steps Underway
December 6, 2025
The retaining wall of the under-construction National Highway at Mylakkadu in Kollam collapsed without a clear explanation from officials or the construction company. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has ordered a high-level probe to be conducted by an expert team from Delhi. Emergency actions are underway. The Kerala Water Authority started ensuring drinking water supply. Damaged panels are being replaced in the affected area.
Full traffic on the right service road will resume by Sunday. Partial traffic on the left road will open for small vehicles by noon on Monday. District Collector N. Devidas said replacement of damaged Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) cables will begin as soon as the necessary report is submitted. Home guards and volunteers will help manage traffic.
The NHAI must provide all inspection details regarding the construction. To avoid similar incidents, a joint inspection will take place in other risk zones like Kottiyam, Mevvaram, Parakkulam, and Kadavoor. Findings will be shared immediately.
Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal visited the site and held the NHAI and construction company fully responsible. He stated the State government is not liable since it only handled land acquisition and handover. Minister J. Chinchurani also inspected the site.
