Rahul Patil, a warden at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, was arrested for trying to smuggle contraband into the jail. He hid two cigarette packets and 60 gm of thin, paper-like narcotic material in his undergarments. The Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) noticed metal detector alarms during a frisk at the prison entrance around 6.50 p.m. on Friday. A physical search recovered the items. Prison Superintendent Paramesh filed a complaint and immediately suspended Patil. Parappana Agrahara police registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and the Karnataka Prisons Act, 1963. This case adds to recent embarrassing incidents involving police and prison staff. State police chief M.A. Saleem issued another circular with guidelines to stop such problems, marking the second in two months. Patil joined the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services in 2018. He served at Belagavi Central Prison before his transfer to Parappana Agrahara on June 29, 2025. Now, just six months later, he is imprisoned in the same jail where he used to work while awaiting bail. Senior prison officials expressed serious embarrassment over the case. Narcotic trafficking inside prisons remains a tough challenge with past staff arrests. Police are investigating if Patil was part of a bigger supply network and to whom the drugs were intended inside the prison.
