Sunali Khatun Returns to West Bengal After Five Months in Bangladesh
December 6, 2025
Sunali Khatun, nine months pregnant, returned to her ancestral home in Birbhum’s Paikar, West Bengal, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, after nearly five months in Bangladesh. A large crowd greeted her with flowers. She entered India from the Malda border on Friday evening and was taken to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital after a brief stay at home.
Sunali told journalists, "There is nothing like one’s own country." She added, "The police did not torture us there (in Bangladesh)," but claimed that Delhi police had "tortured her" and the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel she pleaded to did not listen.
Sunali and her child were part of six migrants from two families detained by Delhi Police in June, suspected as Bangladeshi nationals. The other four family members, also from Birbhum, are expected to return soon, as the Supreme Court ordered their repatriation.
Samirul Islam, Trinamool Congress MP and Chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board, called Sunali’s return "the first phase of our legal battle against the ‘Bangla-Birodhi zamindars.’" He added that the second phase involves "Sweety Biwi and her two minor sons, who are still in the neighbouring country." Sweety’s family members remain in Murarai, waiting along with Sunali’s husband for repatriation.
At a press conference, Trinamool Congress leaders said the Calcutta High Court criticized the Centre for acting "in hot haste and violated due process." The party stated, "The only reason Sunali Khatun is back is because the West Bengal government fought for her... Bengal protected its people while the Centre tried to destroy their dignity. The message is clear: Bengal will not bow down to politically motivated harassment."
On September 26, the High Court ordered the repatriation of the six people after hearing writ petitions. On December 3, the Union government agreed to bring Sunali and her minor son back on "humanitarian grounds" following Supreme Court intervention.
The Supreme Court Bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, accepted a plea by Sunali’s father, Bhodu Sekh, represented by senior advocate Sanjay R. Hegde, to bring his daughter and grandson home to Birbhum.
