Kidwai Completes Risky Bone Marrow Transplant on 9-Year-Old with Relapsed Wilms Tumour
December 6, 2025
The State-run Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO) has successfully completed a difficult bone marrow transplant on a nine-year-old boy with relapsed Wilms tumour, a rare kidney cancer. The child has only one functioning kidney. This major achievement is a milestone for Karnataka’s only government BMT unit, which has done 130 transplants, including 43 for children, since April 2022.
The boy, called Yuvraj (name changed), was first diagnosed in December 2022. He underwent chemotherapy, surgery to remove his left kidney, and radiation therapy. But his cancer came back in April 2025, putting his life at risk. His parents, who work as a domestic helper and daily-wage labourer, could not afford advanced treatment.
Doctors at Kidwai advised high-dose chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant as his best chance to survive. The procedure, led by Dr. Vasundhara Kailasnath on December 2, 2025, was risky because Yuvraj’s remaining kidney was vulnerable, he was very young, had heavy prior treatments, and was at risk of infections.
Dr. Vasundhara said, "We had to ensure strong cancer control while keeping his remaining kidney protected."
Naveen T., Additional Charge Director at KMIO, said the state’s BMT program helps poor children get specialised care that is costly in private hospitals.
At the child’s discharge, Minister Sharan Prakash Patil congratulated the team and gave Kidwai a new HOTA licence. This licence will support BPL patients undergoing BMT. Kidwai is now among a few hospitals in Karnataka with this certificate.
