Doha Opens Lawh Wa Qalam, Museum Honoring Indian Art Legend MF Husain
December 7, 2025
A new museum called Lawh Wa Qalam has opened in Doha, Qatar. It is the world's first museum dedicated to Indian artist MF Husain, who spent his last years in Qatar and became a citizen in 2010. The grey-blue building covers 3,000 sq m inside Qatar Foundation’s Education City. It displays more than 150 works including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, films, and photos. The museum shows the wide range of Husain’s career and his unique style mixing modernism with Indian themes. Known as "the Picasso of India," Husain made famous paintings like his dynamic horses. He also faced controversy over his nude goddess paintings and lived in exile for some years. In Qatar, he found peace and inspiration. The museum features his late multimedia project Seeroo fi al ardh (Walk In The Land) and was designed using a 2008 sketch by Husain. Indian architect Martand Khosla emphasized blending literal and metaphorical designs to echo Husain’s art. Visitors can explore galleries with Husain’s quotes and personal items like his old Indian passport. The museum also highlights his interest in Islamic and Arab culture, showing 36 of 99 commissioned paintings on Arab civilization, including The Battle of Badr. Curator Noof Mohammed said, "We want visitors to experience the world as he did, in an intimate, playful and reflective manner." Local artist Yousef Ahmad said Husain was "a genius who was endlessly fascinated by storytelling." The museum invites visitors to discover Husain’s rich, multi-layered identity beyond his controversies.
