Karnataka’s Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has introduced the mobile-based Karnataka Attendance Management System (KAMS) to monitor attendance for all Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPIs), Block Education Officers (BEOs), and staff at the Commissionerate of Public Instruction in Bengaluru. The new AI-enabled mobile system started on December 1, replacing the old biometric attendance method. The KAMS system uses Facial Recognition and Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies to track attendance. Employees must link their Aadhaar details with their service information to be part of KAMS. Without registration, their monthly salary will not be processed. According to the Commissioner of DPI, "A link has already been shared in the WhatsApp group of the Commissioner’s office to make it mandatory for every officer/staff to register in the KMAS. A user manual and link have also been provided in English and Kannada versions of KAMS. In addition to stopping the salaries of officers and staff who do not register for the new attendance system, disciplinary action will be taken." The change comes amid demands from the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) to extend this system to teachers as well, to reduce frequent teacher absenteeism and improve education quality. Umesh G. Gangavadi, SDMC State president, said, "Teacher absenteeism is common in government schools. Even the officials are not properly managing the attendance of teachers. It is common for many teachers to be absent from school without any reason on the pretext of office work. This is hampering quality education." Karnataka’s initiative also follows its introduction of AI-based Facial Recognition Attendance System for school children earlier, marking a broader push for technology in education management.
