Goa Nightclub Fire Kills 25, Congress and AAP Demand CM's Resignation
December 7, 2025
A deadly fire broke out in a Goa nightclub, claiming 25 lives, sparking political outrage on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demanded the resignation of Goa's BJP Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, blaming him for failing to ensure safety. Many victims were migrant workers from Jharkhand, prompting calls there for a probe and compensation.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the fire "a criminal failure of safety and governance" and pressed for a transparent investigation. Congress leaders Manikrao Thakare and Amit Patkar visited the blaze site, stating the club had operated illegally without liquor permission or fire clearance. Thakare said, "Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should take the entire responsibility for the incident and resign."
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the tragedy "avoidable" and demanded strict fire safety enforcement.
The AAP attacked the BJP government sharply. State president Amit Palekar accused the administration of corruption and poor response, saying, "The CM is shedding crocodile tears. He should resign for this complete administrative failure." He highlighted the lack of proper exits led to most deaths by suffocation and criticized ambulance delays.
AAP’s Atishi Marlena questioned who was responsible at various levels, including local MLAs and the CM, and raised concerns about extortion and lack of action against officials.
BJP MLA Michael Lobo expressed grief and called for safety checks across all clubs. He noted the incident's impact on Goa's reputation as a safe tourist destination.
In Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren mourned the loss of migrant workers. Minister Irfan Ansari demanded a high-level investigation and urged PM Narendra Modi for victim compensation and strict punishment.
Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose described the fire as a failure of governance and administrative apathy, tweeting that innocent lives suffered due to government neglect.
The tragedy has intensified demands for accountability and better safety enforcement in Goa nightclubs.
