Farmers Urged to Burn Draft Seeds Bill to Fight MNC Control and Protect Seed Sovereignty
December 7, 2025
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of farmer groups, has called on farmers to burn copies of the draft Seeds Bill on December 8. The last date for public comments on the Bill ends December 11. SKM says the Bill will give multinational companies (MNCs) and corporate groups control over India's seed supply.
In a statement on Sunday, the SKM said the Seeds Bill will harm federal rights, food security, and seed sovereignty. The Bill, notified on November 12 by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, plans to replace the Seeds Act of 1966.
"SKM strongly denounces this regressive legislation to establish MNC corporate hegemony over the Indian seed sector, seriously undermining food security, seed sovereignty and smother federal rights of the states hence, demands its immediate withdrawal," the SKM said.
The SKM argued the Bill is similar to the Contract Farming Act, aiming to shift seed control to big corporations. It said the Bill lacks guarantees for cheap, quality seeds needed for food and farming security. The group accused the Modi government of ignoring farmers' needs, risking a disaster for small-scale farming.
The SKM urged all farmers to protest by burning the draft Bill in their villages to protect India's seed sovereignty and federal rights. They warned the Bill would let MNCs profit off Indian biodiversity while eroding food security.
The SKM's call comes just days before the public submission deadline, signaling rising farmer opposition to the proposed law.
