The local body election campaign in Thiruvananthapuram district ended Sunday evening with lively celebrations called “Kottikalasam.” Candidates, leaders, and workers from the Left Democratic Front, United Democratic Front, and National Democratic Alliance gathered across the city and rural areas for loud, colorful events. The celebrations mostly remained peaceful. However, a minor clash occurred at Pothencode between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress workers. The police quickly stepped in and separated them. To stop trouble, police had set separate areas for each party’s celebrations and stationed officers between groups. One major gathering spot was Peroorkada junction. Here, parties tried to outshine one another with noise and decorations, creating a chaotic sound mix. Similar smaller celebrations took place at other important junctions. In the afternoon, candidates made their final roadshows in their wards. Cranes were popular as they allowed candidates to stand above crowds for a better view of the festivities. The district will vote on December 9, alongside five other districts in southern and central Kerala. Monday will see silent campaigning, as parties make their last pitch to voters. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation battle is a tough three-way fight. The Left Democratic Front, United Democratic Front, and National Democratic Alliance all want control. Every vote counts in this crucial civic body race.
