BJP Boosts Vote Share in Madurai Amid Temple Lamp Row in 2024 Polls
December 9, 2025
BJP saw a notable rise in voter support in Madurai district during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections compared to its 2016 Assembly election performance. The national party contested alone in 2016 but joined hands with AMMK, PMK, and others in 2024. Of the 10 Assembly constituencies, eight were analyzed since BJP did not field candidates in two. BJP’s 2024 vote share in Madurai was 22.64%, higher than its 2014 tally and well above single digits seen in 2016. The highest vote share was 32.3% in Madurai South, while Thirumangalam recorded the lowest at 11.75%. In Thirupparankundram, site of a recent lamp lighting row, BJP secured 19.8% votes. BJP leader K.S. Radhakrishnan denies electoral motives, saying the party aims to protect "nationalism, Hindu heritage and living culture." Veteran H. Raja noted the controversy has lasted for almost 40 years, recalling that leader P. Rajagopalan was killed in 1994 over the issue. The BJP’s growing influence in Madurai coincides with its active role in the temple lamp dispute at Subramaniya Swamy Temple.
