3-Year-Old Girl Killed in Gaza Amid Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
December 9, 2025
A three-year-old girl named Ahed Tareq Al-Bayouk was killed by Israeli forces on Sunday in Gaza. She was playing close to her family's tent in Mawasi, Rafah, located in southern Gaza, when she was shot. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated it was "not aware of a strike" but promised to "conduct an additional review" as more information comes in. According to Amnesty International, at least 136 children have died in Gaza since a ceasefire started on 10 October. Reporting from inside Gaza is limited due to restrictions by Israel. Ahed's death happened near the so-called Yellow Line, the boundary where Israeli forces agreed to pull back under a US peace plan phase. This plan also called for the return of hostages held after the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. Nearly 1200 people died and 251 were taken hostage in that attack. All hostages have been released except for the remains of an Israeli police officer who was killed. More than 70,000 Palestinians have died from Israeli military actions according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. The World Health Organization reports about 16,500 wounded Palestinians need urgent medical evacuation. Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said the ceasefire is more a "pause" and efforts continue for phase two of the peace plan. This next phase involves establishing a new governing body in Gaza, disarming Hamas, and an Israeli withdrawal. The plan will be managed by a Peace Board chaired by former US President Donald Trump. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested a future Palestinian state could bring peace. But Netanyahu rejected the two-state solution, saying it threatens Israel's existence. Both agreed to move forward with the second phase of the peace plan once the remains of the Israeli officer are returned. Netanyahu will meet Trump on 29 December to discuss the next steps.
