200,000 Flee as Rwanda-backed Rebels Advance Toward Uvira in DRC Amid Peace Pact
December 10, 2025
Nearly 200,000 people have fled their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda-backed M23 rebels are moving towards the town of Uvira, a key location near the Burundi border. This takeover attempt comes just days after Donald Trump hosted the Rwandan and Congolese presidents in Washington for a peace ceremony. Trump said, “Today we’re succeeding where so many others have failed,” claiming an end to a 30-year conflict.
The UN reported at least 74 deaths, mostly civilians, and 83 people hospitalized due to the recent clashes. M23 rebels fought Congolese forces and the local Wazalendo groups in villages north of Uvira. On Monday, the rebels captured Luvungi, a frontline town since February. Heavy fighting continues near villages Sange and Kiliba along the road to Uvira.
Corneille Nangaa, leader of a rebel coalition, called on retreating soldiers not to abandon Uvira. South Kivu government spokesperson Didier Kabi said there was initial chaos in Uvira from rumors about rebel arrival, but calm was restored.
Despite the attacks, M23 leader Bertrand Bisimwa said, “Even if we counterattack, we said that there are no other solutions in the current crisis than the negotiating table, and we want to bring Kinshasa to the negotiating table.” The group supports ongoing Qatari peace talks held in Doha last month.
Rwanda denies backing the rebels, but the US and UN say there is clear evidence of support. Before this recent violence, over 1.2 million people had already been displaced. The US State Department expressed deep concern, stating, “Rwanda, which continues to provide support to M23, must prevent further escalation.”
